I’m yet to be disappointed by The Mess Hall.
The Mess Hall on Bourke St is one of those places that I always end up at for lunch, simply because it fits all that work lunch criteria: easily accessible, friendly, buzzy atmosphere and consistently delicious food.
It’s always good – the lamb salad with cous cous and roasted carrots is to die for and the paninis are great – but today I went for the special: salmon with grilled pancetta, a berlotti bean ragu and salsa verde.
Normally, I find salmon incredibly bland – but the mix of the beans, pesto, roasted cherry tomatoes and the tangy salsa verde spruced the fish up nicely, and the addition of pancetta was just genius (that said, I’m always biased when it comes to anything resembling crispy bacon).
The only remark I would make is that the fish took a while and I was anxious about getting back to work. Other than that, this was an all-round warm, fuzzy, om-nom-nommy experience that I would highly recommend.
